Operational and Manoeuvring Study of a 80,000 DWT Oil Tanker in a new Oil Terminal in the Port of Algeciras

Location: Algeciras Bay, Cadiz (Spain)
Client: Alpetrol Terminal

Project Objectives:

  • Analyze feasibility of oil tanker operations in the new Oil maritime terminal designed in the Port of Algeciras (Cadiz).

The reference ship model was:

  • Oil tanker “Siboeva”: Panamax 83.000 DWT and 248 m length

Tools and Methodology

A Real-time Ship Bridge Simulator (MERMAID 500 model developed by MARIN-MSCN (The Netherlands)) was used. This tool is property of Siport21 and located in Madrid. This is the only privately-owned simulator of this kind in Spain. The dynamic response of the moored ship was simulated using the numerical model SHIP-MOORINGS developed by Alkyon (Hydraulic Consultancy & Research, The Netherlands).
The analysis was carried out following the methodology described by PIANC (International Navigation Association as well as in Spanish Port Authority Recommendation ROM 3.1-99 “Maritime Recommendations for the Design of Port Access and Manoeuvring Areas”.
