Inland Waterways Dimensions and their classification

The company Siport21 has presented, in the International Ports, Waterways, Multimodal Transport and Foreign Commerce Conference in Buenos Aires (Argentina), a paper about inland waterways dimensions and their classification. It is a summary based on the research of two PIANC working groups.

Working Group 141 “Design Guidelines for Inland Waterway Dimensions” has the aim to provide a standard methodology for inland waterways considering three recommended design steps: “Concept Design”, “Practice Approach” and “Detailed Design”.

Special recommendations will be provided for designing fairways in canals and rivers, bridge opening widths, geometry of lock approaches and dimensions of turning basins, junctions and berthing places.

The forthcoming report provides also guide notes on the optimal use of ship handling simulators for waterway design purposes.

The new Working Group 201 is a combination of Inland Navigation Commission (InCom-PIANC) and Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The main objective is to develop a proposal and implementation strategy for a common supra-national inland waterway classification for South America, based on WG 141 Report and other international references.

Nowadays Siport21 is part of other PIANC Working Groups: “Ship Handling Simulation Dedicated to Channel and Harbour Design”, “Berthing Velocities and Fender Design”, “Interaction between Offshore Wind Farms and Maritime Navigation” and “Mooring of Large Ships at Quay Walls”.
